The Elephant in da Room

We have heard that a new organization has been formed, headed by the literati of the Diaspora. Mention is also made of the General who ran away and has kept some of us amused and/or wondering for the last few months as he spitted fire against the wily dictator who has ruled Uganda with an iron grip for more than a quarter century. It is all well and good that this organization should be all-inclusive. The question is: how effective will it be in correcting what has gone wrong in Uganda, let alone having the wherewithal to oust the dictator?

My guess is that this organization has been in the works for a long time, and from the press release, the rest of us will soon hear of its makeup and what it can do. Words are cheap.

As the fledgling organization moves forward my hope is that they traced the root causes of what brought us to the here. Yes, there is the winners-take-all attitude once village boys assume power. Yes, there is the wild violence to each other--and no one can claim holier-than-thou. Yes, there is the get-rich-quick, having been from dirt-poor households. Yes, there is the tribal chauvinism. My sense, however, is that what brought us here is the Buganda Question--the elephant in the house of Uganda. What is Buganda? What should be its relationship to the state of Uganda?

The British left the so-called Buganda Question unresolved. In the efforts to reslove, we got the infamous UPC-KY alliance, which was essentially made to decapitate DP in Buganda. Only less than 4000--virtualy all KY- voted in Buganda in the poll leading to Independence, thereby disenfranchising the majority of Baganda.

So, we started a country with intrigues and we are carrying on the legacy of our birth. Can we turn the tide?
